Methi Jowar Muthiya

Methi Jowar Muthiya is a traditional Gujarati snack that combines the goodness of jowar flour and fresh methi leaves. This savory steamed snack is spiced with a blend of ginger, green chili, cumin, and ajwain, offering a delightful burst of flavors in every bite. Muthiyas are steamed and then lightly sautéed, giving them a crispy exterior while retaining a soft, tender inside. This wholesome and nutritious dish is perfect for breakfast, a light meal, or even as an evening snack.
For a Serving Size of Two:
Ingredients:
- 60 grams jowar flour
- 30 grams whole wheat flour
- 50 grams finely chopped fresh methi leaves
- 20 grams grated carrot
- 2 tablespoons yogurt
- 1 tablespoon ginger-green chili paste
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon ajwain seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon hing
- 1/2 teaspoon sesame seeds
- 1 teaspoon oil
- Salt to taste
- Water as needed
Procedure:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the jowar flour, whole wheat flour, chopped methi leaves, grated carrot, yogurt, ginger-green chili paste, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, ajwain seeds, red chili powder, hing, and salt.
- Mix all the ingredients well, adding water little by little to form a soft and smooth dough. The dough should be firm but pliable.
- Divide the dough into small portions and shape them into cylindrical rolls (about 2-3 inches long).
- Place the shaped muthia rolls in a steamer and steam them for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are cooked through. A toothpick inserted should come out clean.
Once done, remove them from the steamer and let them cool slightly. - Heat oil in a pan and add sesame seeds. Allow them to splutter.
- Add the steamed muthia pieces to the pan and sauté them until they turn golden brown on all sides.
- Serve the Methi Jowar Muthia hot with green chutney or yogurt.
