Steamed Banana Leaf Fish

Indulge in the wholesome flavors of Kerala with our Steamed Banana Leaf Fish recipe. This delightful dish combines the freshness of fish fillets with aromatic spices, all lovingly wrapped in banana leaves and steamed to perfection.

Ingredients:

  • 2 fresh fish fillets (such as tilapia or snapper), about 6 ounces each
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 banana leaves (large enough to wrap the fish)
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, mix ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, lemon juice, and salt to make a marinade.
  2. Rub the marinade all over the fish fillets, ensuring they are evenly coated. Let them marinate for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, rinse the banana leaves with water and lightly heat them over a flame to make them pliable.
  4. Place one fish fillet on each banana leaf. Fold the banana leaf over the fish to form a packet. Secure the ends with toothpicks or string.
  5. Prepare a steamer or use a large pot with a steamer insert. Add water to the pot and bring it to a simmer.
  6. Place the fish packets in the steamer or on the steamer insert and cover with a lid. Steam for about 12-15 minutes or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
  7. Carefully remove the fish packets from the steamer and let them cool slightly.
  8. Open the packets, garnish with fresh coriander leaves, and serve hot with steamed vegetables or brown rice.
