Here’s How Stress Affects your Body

Agree or not, stress affects us all. Almost all of us deal with stress on a regular basis and sometimes we cannot even worry about it and let things move in a similar direction. Stress is basically a change in your environment or lifestyle that rings a call for your mind to react and adjust in response to the situation. But if your mind won’t be able to adjust according to the situation then your body suffers negative changes in physical, mental, and emotional health.

Types of stress

In the recent past, stress makes its roots in our life completely and has become a normal part of our life. However, every type of stress is not harmful to one’s health and some of it cannot even affect your psychological strain. The different types of stress include eustress, acute stress, episodic acute stress and chronic stress. Eustress is the kind of stress that brings fun and excitement with it. This type of stress is referred to as a positive one and makes you all energetic and inspired while acute stress is not very long term stress and it is one of the common stresses that we often deal with in our regular life. The more chaotic version of acute stress is known as episodic acute stress. One of the most serious types of stress is chronic stress. This type of stress is never-ending and people do often feel depressed and sad when they suffer from chronic stress.

Right from headaches to heart attacks, there are various effects of stress on your body. Let’s have a look at all:

  • Increased depression: While majorly, stress comes and goes! But a long period of stress can bring destruction to your mental health while giving you an increased risk of depression. Chronic stress can wear your emotional state down and make you feel empty inside as well.
  • Insomnia: An improper dealing with the stress can take away your sleep and can make you suffer from insomnia as well.
  • Increased risk of a heart attack: Chronic stress can make a raise in your blood sugar levels which can take you through the lane of high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and increased risk of diabetes and over time it can even damage your arteries as well which can make you suffer from various types of heart problems.
  • Stomachache: Various researches have said that not dealing with the stress at a proper interval of time can destroy a body’s digestive system which can further create big problems like nausea, stomachache and other core related problems.
  • Weakened immune system: A long term stress can wear down your immune system while taking your body more close to infections and diseases.

Symptoms of stress

Emotional symptoms of stress include:

  • Ease in agitation, frustration, moodiness
  • A feeling of losing control
  • Difficulty in relaxing and quieting the mind
  • Feeling bad and unworthy and depressed
  • Feelings of living alone

Physical symptoms of stress include:

  • Low energy
  • Headaches
  • Upset stomach (diarrhoea, constipation, and nausea)
  • Aches, pains, and tense muscles
  • Chest pain and rapid heartbeat
  • Recurrent colds and infections

Behavioural symptoms of stress include:

  • Positive and negative changes in appetite
  • Increased consumption of alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes
  • Nervous behaviours (Nail biting, fidgeting, and pacing)
