Monitoring the daily intake of sugar is good for everyone, but it is very essential for people with diabetes! People with diabetes are recommended to cut-off on sugar and eat a healthy and balanced diet. Also, it is often believed that fruits consumed by diabetic patients can raise their blood sugar levels, but it is completely a myth! Fruits are a power pack of a variety of nutrients and are a very healthy way to satisfy your hunger pangs. Although most of the fruits contain high amounts of sugar, there are some which are not harmful to diabetics because they have a low sugar content. The glycemic index of any food item determines if it is good for diabetes or not, for instance, if a food has a low GI content then, it doesn’t raise the blood glucose levels inside the body!

  • Orange – Orange is the powerhouse of Vitamin C. It has a low GI and is rich in potassium and folate which helps balance blood pressure. One can also go for any other type of citrus fruits as well, like grapefruits, kiwi etc.
  • Apples – Rightly said, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Apples are rich in fibre and Vitamin C which makes them a good option for diabetics. Do not peel your apples, though, the skins are the most nutritious part, full of antioxidants.
  • Pears – Pre-PEAR yourself! This fibrous fruit is loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. And the red-skinned pears contain carotenoids, which are thought to reduce the risk of certain cancers and eye disease.
  • Strawberries – This red-coloured mouth-watering berries comes under low glycemic index. Eating a reasonable amount of strawberries can also protect your heart, increase your HDL (good) cholesterol level, and decrease your LDL (bad) cholesterol level.
  • Avocados – Avocados are naturally low in sugar, with just 1 gram of sugar per fruit, avocados are very healthy for diabetics. They also help in lowering the level of bad cholesterols in the body that helps in protecting the heart.
  • Guavas – Guavas are high in Vitamin A, C and dietary fiber. This fruit has a fairly low GI making it a part of a diabetics’ must have fruit plate. Also, it is mostly advised to eat it without skin which reduces sugar absorption in the blood.
