The literal meaning of Maha Shivratri is “The Great Night of Shiva,” this festival is a sacred festival for many of the devotees of Lord Shiva that observe fasts throughout the day. Shivratri is the biggest, most important festival of the year, especially for Shiva devotees. On this day, devotees take a dip in the holy Ganges, bathe the shiva lingam in milk, and visit the Shiva temple, and chant prayers and sing in the praise for the Lord. Since milk is an essential part of the offering, the Prasad for the festival involves lots of kheer and other milk-based delicacies.

Here are some recipes that are great for a fast on the Maha Shivratri Day-

1- Dhokla

It is easy to tweak this delicacy according to the needs of a fast. This traditional dish can be a reliever for those fasting. You just have to replace the normal gram flour or rice that you use with Vrat’s rice also called Samvat ka Chawal, and replace the normal regular salt with rock salt.

2- Kuttu Cheela

This fast-friendly recipe is easy to make and like the first recipe, needs only replacing the normal flour with buckwheat flour which can be consumed during a fast. This recipe is packed with nutrients due to the presence of buckwheat, which is known to be a superfood, and has good carbohydrates, and can be made as a breakfast or a snack option.

3- Sabudana Khichdi

Khichdi is always an option for the ones who do not like to spend a long time standing in the kitchen, especially during fasts. This easy-to-make and filling recipe is also great if you feel like you are under the weather and need a quick-to-make recipe. Sabudana khichdi is a wholesome meal and the most preferred meal option.

4- Sabudana Vada

This dish is a very popular and savory snack made for people who are fasting. It is a deep-fried snack made from tapioca pearls, known as sago, with other ingredients like potatoes, peanuts, and herbs. This recipe is also gluten-free and vegan, which adds to the benefits of this recipe. This recipe gives you a super delicious crispy vada with a soft and light interior made especially for consumption during fasts.

5- Makhana Kheer

As we already know, milk is one of the most widely offered and important ingredients of the festival, therefore having a sweet delicacy which is also a good suggestion for those on a fast, is makhana kheer. This dessert option, made of makhanas, can also be offered as a Prasad to the Lord.
