Are you Eating When You are Full or Not Hungry?

Almost all of us go through the problem of eating extra even when we are full. There are times when we keep on bingeing without thinking that it can lead to weight, bloating, uneasiness. Food makes us feel good and without realizing how much we have consumed, extra calories keep on adding up.

We find excuses to binge on our favourite food and keep on eating it even when we are full because we cannot resist. Some of us are night eaters because we don’t sleep and eat on odd hours, some of us are addicted to having pre-meal in the form of snacks which are extra and over the limits that our body needs.

Our body needs time to digest the food that we consume but we being impatient don’t give our body the required time and keep on filling ourselves. The human body is not designed in the way of differentiating between thirst and hunger, due to which we end up eating despite being full. There are many reasons behind the unnecessary eating and some of them are as follows:

Boredom: Work keeps a person engaged and that is one important thing to do so. Office goers have specified timings and routine to eat food whereas if you have ever noticed yourselves on a holiday, you end up eating more and more food because of the idealness. Boredom plays a major role in the excessive intake of food. When a person has no work to do and is bored, he/she find a way to binge on snacks, which is why even if you have had your meal already, you keep on eating.

Not being mindful about eating: Keeping an eye on your habits is a must because humans are vulnerable to overeating when not feeling satisfied. If a person gets attached to something, it builds into a habit. Let’s say while a person is watching TV, he/she end up having more food than usual because of unawareness, unconsciousness.

Psychologically, not feeling satiated: Humans find ways to have more food and make food the only way to get away with a particular situation. Some might consume an excessive amount of food because it gives them happiness, some might have it for just the sake of having it because their mind is made that way, others might keep eating to avoid something or some situation. The body gets signs through the mind and if our mind is not psychologically strong, consequences like overeating will happen.

Emotionally unstable state of mind: When a person is going through a hard phase, he/she find ways to overcome the sadness. You might have seen people overeating out of stress, it’s because food provides comfort to them. Stress eating leads to the intake of extra calories because food becomes a substitute for happiness.

The problem of overeating can be cured by:

  • Practicing mindful eating
  • Increasing the intake of water
  • Know your trigger foods and avoid them
  • Eat slowly
  • Give your body the time to digest

Over to you

If you also eat when you are not hungry, don’t worry, you are not alone. Try and be focused on your work and fix the desired diet, that’ll help you overcome your problem of overeating. Also, it is recommended to consult a dietitian for the right diet.
