Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects women’s menstrual cycle causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges.   • Lowers blood sugar and insulin levels: High levels of blood sugar and insulin are common in PCOS. A small study showed significant reductions in insulin resistance among women with PCOS who took the cinnamon supplements for 8 weeks compared to the control group. Another study demonstrated that cinnamon intake could decrease post-meal glucose levels by delaying carbohydrate digestion. In conclusion, cinnamon supplementation can help people with PCOS in controlling the metabolic symptoms.
  • Helps to regulate menstrual cycles: Many women with PCOS experience irregular periods due to hormonal imbalance. Cinnamon could help regulate hormones and menstrual cycles in women with PCOS. Also, there is a study that suggests that cinnamon can also reduce menstrual pain.
  • Lower cholesterol levels: Many people with PCOS have elevated cholesterol. Cinnamon has been shown to reduce total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol levels.
  • Decrease Inflammation: Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to fight free radicals in your body and repair tissue damage. Since women with PCOS are more prone to chronic low-grade inflammation, it’s important to take care of the body early on!
  • Decrease AMH levels: PCOS is known to be linked with a higher level or irregular patterns of Anti-mullerian hormone (AMH). A study showed a significant decrease in AMH levels among those people having PCOS who took cinnamon for six months.
  • Lowers risk of heart diseases: High cholesterol levels and high blood pressure that are often present in PCOS patients can lead to heart disease and stroke. According to studies, cinnamon has properties that are effective in lowering blood pressure and reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease.

Tips to incorporate cinnamon into your diet and boost your health:

  • Add to your warm drinks – coffees and teas. You can avoid sugar as cinnamon has a slightly sweet taste.
  • Sprinkle on warm porridge or oatmeal. Then add some chopped nuts to get your perfect plate!
  • Add it to your yogurt.
  • Add to your favourite smoothie.
  • It also goes great as spiced apples. Pour some cinnamon on apples and you can even bake them.
