Why Are Supplements Important?

Before we proceed further in discussing the importance of supplements let’s take those dietary supplements in a limelight to understand things in a better way. Dietary supplements are the products to supplement your daily nutritional intake, usually of vitamins and minerals. Other dietary supplements include herbal products, essential fatty acids and oils, amino acids, probiotics, enzymes, and glandular extracts. These supplements come in different forms such as capsules, tablets, drinks, powders, as well as energy bars which are taken to increase energy, enhance performance, maintain strength and health and prevent nutritional deficiencies.

Reaching out to some supplement pills, you might wonder if they are safe to have and if so, then how well they’ll work?  The first question to ask yourself is whether you actually need them at the first place or not? It becomes quite important to find out the answers to these questions if you are planning to take dietary supplements.

So typically, you should be getting all the essential nutrients from a well-balanced diet. However, taking supplements have been proven to be safe that provides required nutrients when your diet is lacking behind in nutrients for an overall well-being or when certain health conditions cause a deficiency of nutrients that can’t be fulfilled from a routine diet. Studies suggest that some supplements can enhance health in different ways when taken appropriately while following a nutritious diet.

Now the question that arrives is why supplements are important, whether you actually need them or not? Well, the answer may vary because not all of us need supplements. In case, if you are unable to get some specific dietary nutrient that your body requires from the daily meal, dietary supplements may be required. However, these tablets and pills cannot replace a healthy balanced diet. The following groups may require dietary supplements:

  •  People consuming less than 1600 calories per day.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women.
  • Postmenopausal women and those with heavy menstruation.
  •  People with food intolerances and food allergies.

Evidence proving dietary supplements are beneficial says women planning a pregnancy or when pregnant should take folic acid since pregnancy decreases the levels of folic acid in your body. Postmenopausal women and women above thirty need Vitamin D and calcium to keep bones strong and reduce bone loss. Women also required iron supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Benefits of supplements in your diet

While a healthy balanced diet is a natural source of vital vitamins and minerals; dietary supplements, on the other hand, maybe proven beneficial in ensuring those nutrients it needs each day. For example, after a meal supplementing your diet with B vitamins can help absorb nutrients from the meal while enabling a proper metabolism. Some specific dietary supplements like calcium and vitamin D aids in tissue repairing and maintenance and prevents diseases. Few dietary supplements approved by FDA are calcium, iron, and chromium. And other supplements to consider are multivitamins, probiotics, protein and essential oils (fish oil).

Dietary Supplement Safety Guidelines

  • Don’t take supplements as a substitute for prescribed medicines.
  •  Taking multiple supplements may cause problems.
  •   Taking too much of vitamins or minerals can be harmful.
  • Consult with your doctor before taking any supplements.
  •   Natural doesn’t always mean safe like ephedra.
  •   Take supplements only from reputed and well-known brands.

Over to you

A healthful and balanced diet for sure supplies your body with sufficient nutrients to be carried out to perform routine tasks. Supplements such as vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids on the other, enrich your body’s internal environment, fortify cellular protection, repair, and regeneration and support the renewal process when your body fails to get nutrient from natural food sources. Considering the importance of supplements, only add it when it’s required the most or prescribed by your doctor or nutritionist.
