Malaria and dengue are major threats to public health. Both dengue and malaria are transmitted by a single mode that is a mosquito. They are transmitted only through the bite of an infected mosquito, but each disease is caused by different mosquitoes. Malaria is considered an infectious disease caused by a parasite, while dengue is a viral infection.

Symptoms of malaria are chills or fever, headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and nausea. In case of dengue, rashes, swollen glands, severe headache, muscle pains, nausea, and vomiting are some of the common symptoms. If both of them are not managed properly, it can lead to serious complications and possibly even death. The prevention and control of these diseases are very crucial to human health. 5 hygiene practices you should follow to avoid falling sick because of Dengue and Malaria are as under:

  • No stagnant water: Stagnant water should not be there in or around your home. Stagnant water can be hazardous as it provides the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes to grow. Remove excess water from plant pot plates, change the water in flower vases every second day, and scrub containers to remove mosquito eggs. So, if you see any water accumulation near your home or nearby place, take immediate steps to clean it.
  • Proper garbage disposal: Always make sure that you dispose of all the garbage at home very well. Keep your wet and dry waste separately and always keep the bins covered as mosquitoes can spread here.
  • Wash your hands properly: In case you get wet in the rain, it is paramount that you wash your hands and feet well with a good antibacterial soap as soon as you get inside the home. Make sure that you teach your children the basic hygiene techniques and ways to properly wash their hands because children are most vulnerable to these diseases.
  • Apply insect repellents and wear protective clothing: To lower the risk of infection spread by mosquitoes, wear protective clothing such as loose, light-coloured, long sleeve tops and trousers. Apply insect repellents to clothing and exposed skin. Do not apply to wounds or irritated skin. Follow the instructions, re-apply insect repellent if necessary. Taking these measures can help you protect yourself from dengue and other vector-borne diseases like malaria.
  • Stay in well-screened houses: Make sure that all the windows are closed properly or the door screens do not contain any holes. This would possibly eliminate the chances of any mosquitoes entering the house. Also, keep your house clean and tidy to avoid mosquito growth.
