Cancer is a non-contagious disease that can affect any part of the body. In this disease, abnormal cells divide without any control and destroy body tissues. It is of many types as it can spread to any part of the body. The most common cancers are breast, lung, colon and rectum, and prostate cancers.
Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and around one-third of the deaths are due to tobacco use, high body mass index, alcohol consumption, low fruit and vegetable intake, improper diet, and lack of physical activity. Therefore, a good lifestyle is important in order to prevent cancer at your end.
On World Cancer Day, the World Health Organisation has tweeted suggestions for you to reduce the risk of developing cancer.
Here Are A Few Suggestions By WHO On Ways Through Which You Can Reduce The Risk Of Developing Cancer:
1- Do Not Smoke- consumption of tobacco is injurious to health! Smoking or even chewing tobacco can cause oral and lung cancer. Exposure to any other kind of smoke can also lead to cancers, so make your home smoke-free.
2- Healthy Diet- making good dietary choices is good for overall health and can reduce your risk of developing cancer. A clean and balanced diet builds immunity too. Including fruits and vegetables, whole foods, and excluding processed and high-calorie sugary foods can help maintain weight and a good BMI.
3- Breastfeeding- it is said to reduce the risk of cancer in mothers who breastfeed. Breastfeeding is healthy for both mother and the child. So, breastfeed your baby for at least the first 6 months.
4- Vaccination- vaccinate your children against Hepatitis B and HPV.
5- Sun Protection- longer exposure to the sun and UR rays can damage the skin cells and cause skin cancer. Avoid too much sun and always use sunscreen.
6- Reduce Air Pollution- reduce indoor and outdoor air pollution as it can bring pollutants to the lungs, can cause cell damage leading to lung cancer.
7- Be Physically Active- physical activity will help you maintain a healthy BMI and build your immunity.
8- Limit Alcohol Intake- alcohol consumption can make the cell replicate incorrectly, causing tissue damage and absorption of carcinogens.
9- Cancer Screening Programmes- these programmes aim to detect cancer even before symptoms appear. Take part in organised cancer screening programmes as early detection of cancer can help cure it effectively.
An unhealthy lifestyle can increase the risk of many diseases including cancer. Practicing a good, healthy routine can uplift your way of living and reduce the risk of developing cancer. Apart from the suggestions discussed above, you should practice safe sex and avoid sharing needles.
