United Nations Tweeted Tips For Parents & Caregivers On How To Start Mental Health Conversations With Young People

Mental health is one of the most neglected areas of public health and well-being. Globally the ratio of mental health professionals in the population is more than 1:10,0001 although the needs are significant, including for under-18s. No one should have to deal with mental health challenges on their own. Far too many children still do. You can change that. It starts with one moment, one conversation, one question.

What You Shouldn’t Say:

  • Why don’t you just act normal?
  • You never tell me what’s going on with you.
  • It’s all in your head. There are lots of people who have it much worse than you.

What You Should Say:

  • You haven’t seemed like yourself lately. I’m here to listen if you want to talk or if I can help in any way.
  • It can be difficult to put into words how we’re feeling at times and that’s okay. I’m here if there is anything you want to share or if you want just company.
  • I can understand how difficult this must be for you and I’m sorry. You don’t have to go through this alone. Would it help to think together about what support you might need?

Tips On How To Start Mental Health Conversations:

  • 0-5 years old- Lay the groundwork for a lifetime of good mental health in this period of growth and learning.
  • 6-10 years old- Starting school, navigating friendships, and building resilience – the focus shifts to the outside world.
  • 11-13 years old- Physical changes, appearances, and friendships – there is much to navigate in this challenging time.
  • 14-18 years old- How to tackle emotional, behavioral, and health risks that could influence the rest of their lives.

From the moment they are born, babies look to caregivers to help them learn, develop and thrive. Positive relationships with caregivers are vital for promoting a young child’s brain development, well-being, and mental health. Whether a parent, grandparent, or other caring adult, caregivers play the most important role in supporting children’s physical, emotional, and cognitive development. But parenting is not an easy job and, as any caregiver knows, it doesn’t come with an instruction manual.

Over To You:
Parents’ ability to be the best caregivers they can be is also shaped by their experiences and well-being. This is why parenting interventions and early childhood development (ECD) programs need to focus not only on the holistic development of children but also on caregivers themselves.
