World Stroke Day- Warning Signs & Prevention Guidelines of Stroke

October 29 is celebrated as World Stroke Day. The day aims at raising awareness of stroke prevention, support, and treatment. Around 80 million people in the world have been through a stroke, while on the contrary, 50 million strokes relicted but with some form of abiding disability.  According to the World Stroke Organisation (WSO) every day, millions of the survivors have the access to get the right kind of rehabilitation and care along with indelible support recovery as possible. The campaign aims at providing the right care and support and encourages them by #UpAgainAfterStroke.

What is a Stroke? 

It is a condition wherein the blood supply to the brain is disturbed, leading to oxygen malnutrition meant loss of function, and brain damage. Stroke can happen to anyone no matter what their age is and at any time as it is a medical emergency and requires to elicit treatment. Early treatment can help lessen the potential complications and brain damage. In many cases, strokes can be prevented and treated.

Warning Signs & Prevention Guidelines of Stroke:

The main symptoms and signs of a stroke can be remembered with the word ‘FAST’:

Face – The face includes eye or the mouth, the person may not be able to smile, may have dropped on one side.

Arms – A person may not be able to raise both arms and keep them there due to numbness or weakness in one arm.

Speech – The person may not be able to talk at all despite appearing to be awake or slurring speech.

Time – If you see any of these symptoms or signs, go and dial the emergency number immediately

Symptoms of stroke:

Headache, Dizziness, trouble in walking, confusion, or severe cases even paralysis. 

From the symptoms, it is clear that we should not wait for the symptoms and act ‘Fast’. Under any condition, it is not recommended to treat any symptoms of stroke ‘lightly’. The message being, don’t wait for the circumstances and as always, prevention is better than cure.

29th October is recognized as World Stroke Day. On this day people all around the world spread awareness about the fatality, pre-stroke, and post-stroke events. A rehabilitation organization known as ‘World Stroke Organisation’ or ‘WSO’ is also available for the patients to attain proper attention to their health. A stroke is a condition when our brain doesn’t get enough amount of oxygen and thus leads to malfunction of our body. Strokes can be prevented and even treated given that we have adequate information and knowledge about the said condition. Remembering the ‘Fast’ rule can be beneficial, also look out for the symptoms which may seem common but could be signs of a stroke. Hence it is important to not only treat strokes but also to prevent it under any costs, which is why experts recommend acting fast and prevent waiting for any of the symptoms to arrive.
