Nutritional Guidelines for Prevention & Management of Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer is a type of disease in which the cells of the brain start deteriorating. This condition can lead to a loss in memory and hamper the function of the brain. From genetic to environmental- there could be various causes of Alzheimer’s disease. Sedentary lifestyle, not consuming a proper diet, over-eating and medical conditions like high blood pressure levels and cholesterol levels are all a major cause of this disease. Memory loss, confusion, issues in recognizing visuals or disputes in solving problems are the prominent and most common symptoms of Alzheimer. A healthy and nutritious diet can treat the symptoms of Alzheimer while easing out the condition for you. Relying on proper diet and some lifestyle changes can even prevent the Alzheimer disease while making you fit and healthier.

  • Add more fruits and veggies: Green leafy vegetables and fruits are extremely important to manage and prevent Alzheimer. Fruits and dark leafy greens are filled with essential nutrients that not only fuel the body with proper energy but also decrease the risk of various types of diseases. To manage the Alzheimer disease, consuming 5 servings of fruits and veggies is vital. You can include spinach, kale, mustard leaves, broccoli as these are rich in antioxidants, Vitamin K, lutein and beta-carotene which are well known in boosting brain health. You can also include different types of berries in your diet as it contains flavonoids that are beneficial in stimulating brain pathways.
  • Limit foods with high saturated fat: Saturated fats are bad for the health and if you are suffering from this medical condition then you should completely cut down the sources of saturated fats from your diet. To reduce the risk of any further health complications, make sure that you pick your fats wisely as high consumption of saturated fats can increase the risk of heart diseases as well. You can include avocados, tofu, nuts and seeds, fatty fish and eggs in your diet to consume healthier version of fats.
  • Add omega 3s: Omega 3 fatty acids are extremely beneficial in treating this disease. Nuts and seeds especially walnuts, chia seeds and flax seeds are rich in omega 3s which helps in maintaining brain health. Also, these foods have high quantities of antioxidants and contain anti-inflammatory properties that can ease out the symptoms of Alzheimer disease while promoting healthier cells inside the brain.
  • Incorporate whole grains: Whole grains like oats, quinoa and barley provide essential nutrients and are rich in B Vitamins that are quintessential in minimising the pain of the brain. B vitamins are also helpful in improving the memory and smooth functioning of the brain.
