Karwa Chauth is a festival which is significantly celebrated by Hindu married women. In the month of Kartik, as per the Hindu Lunar calendar, it is observed by married women, that they keep a nirjala vrat that is fast without food and water, until they worship the moon, for their husband’s long and prosperous life. On this auspicious occasion, most women especially Punjabis receive sargi from their mother-in-law.
What is Sargi? As per the tradition, it is a pre-dawn treat from a mother-in-law to her daughter-in-law for a blissful marriage. It is a custom wherein, women wake-up before sunrise, which is around 4-5 a.m. and their mother-in-law presents a thali of sweet and savoury foods. The daughter-in-law receives gifts as a symbol of love and care. Sargi is a collection of yummy food with gifts that are said to help women fulfil their fast. To make your sargi delightful here’s what you can include in your sargi thali:
DRY FRUITS:
Since dry fruits are rich in nutrients, they are the most important part of sargi. Dry fruits like raisins, cashew, pistachios, and almonds are known for its energizing ability.

As your body goes through dehydration during vrat, its essential for you to have fresh and juicy fruits to make up for the loss of water content in your body during the fasting period. Citrus fruits like orange and sweet lime, nutritious fruits like apples and pomegranate help you maintain the pH level of your body.
SWEETS:
An Indian festival without sweets is something unheard of. Therefore, a sargi thali should have sweets. The sugar in the sweets is great for providing much-needed energy during the fasting period. You will need this sattvik for the purity of mind and soul.
LIGHT COOKED FOODS:
A simple cooked dish, halwa, a couple of chapatis and a simple vegetable dish, is all correct for you to suffice this auspicious fasting day. Have dishes that are easy to digest and avoid any heavy oily food that can lead to lethargy.
SEWAIYAAN:
Sewaiyaan is an integral part of sargi. It is a popular north-Indian dessert that is traditionally prepared using handmade javein.
