A Guide to Nurture New Born

Nurturing a newborn baby is an art that is possessed by each parent intuitively and lovingly. Everything that we do with the baby like cuddling, singing, feeding, changing diapers, etc contributes to the infant’s development.

We all know how many times people tell you to do something in another way as it might not be good for the baby from their experience. But you do you! Always remember you are doing a great job being a new parent. To sort all your queries, we have a complete guide for you while you nurture your newborn with utmost love and care!

  • Give support to your baby’s head and neck: Cradle the head when carrying your baby and support the head when carrying the baby upright or when you lay your baby down as they have very fragile bones that require necessary support.
  • Handle a new born only with the washed or sanitized hands only: Newborns don’t have a very strong immune system yet, so they are at great risk for infection. Make sure that everyone who handles your baby has clean hands and does not have any infections like cold or flu.
  • Change diapers frequently to avoid rashes: Change your baby’s diaper often, and as soon as possible after bowel movements. Gently clean the area with mild soap and water as using wipes always can irritate the skin, and then apply a very thick layer of diaper rash or ‘barrier’ cream. Consult a doctor if rashes seem to be getting worse.
  • While travelling with a newborn make sure your baby is secured: It is important to keep the baby safely fastened into the carrier, stroller, or car seat. Limit any activity that could be too rough or bouncy for the baby.
  • Give a sponge bath in the initial days: You should give your baby a sponge bath until the umbilical cord falls off and the navel heals completely (1–4 weeks). A bath two or three times a week in the first year will be perfect for hygiene purposes. More frequent bathing may lead to drying skin.
  • Do not overfeed your baby: Whether breastfeeding your newborn or a bottle feeding, you may be stumped as to how often to do so. It is advised that babies should be fed on demand whenever they seem hungry. Your baby will give you hints by putting fingers in his or her mouth, crying, or making thumb sucking noises very often. A newborn baby needs to be fed after every 2 to 3 hours.
  • Practice ways to put your baby to sleep: Newborns typically sleep for periods of 2–4 hours. Many newborns tend to be more awake and alert at night and sleepier during the daytime. One way to help them is to keep stimulation at night to a bare minimum. Keep the room lights very low by using a nightlight. Play with your baby during the daytime. Try to keep him or her awake a little longer by talking and playing games, so that your baby sleeps more at night time.
