Ways Moms-To-Be Can Take Care of Their Mental Health during Pandemic

Pregnancy is a life-altering journey all by itself, even when a pandemic is not ravaging the world. While this typical journey to motherhood is typically associated with a sea of varying emotions, the on-going pandemic has certainly added to the stress and anxiety levels of expectant mothers and their near and dear ones.

Right from the fear of fighting COVID-19 to the disruption of existing plans of pregnancy, this challenging period has given rise to spells of confusion and anxiety for the mothers-to-be. We are listing down seven ways you can guard your mental health during these unprecedented times and take better care of yourself, for your baby.

Here’s what pregnant females can do to keep themselves safe:

  • Follow guidelines

The guidelines for expectant mothers are pretty much the same as for the general public. This means ensuring that you don’t step out unless it is absolutely necessary, wear face-masks or face-covers while going out, wash or sanitize your hands frequently and avoid touching your face. While pregnancy can certainly be challenging, knowing that you are practising the necessary precautions can put your mind at ease.

  • Acceptance eases the process

Try and not dwell too much over how things have changed rapidly in the course of 7 months. As we all collectively try to adapt to the new normal, let the focus stay on welcoming your little one. This basically means acknowledge that even though these are testing times, you can still create a routine out of this new normal.

  • Stay close to your family and support system

In the era of social distancing, it can obviously be frustrating to not meet your loved ones. Hence, ensure that you stay connected with close friends and family members via phone or video calls. It will help you feel emotionally connected even during these unprecedented times.

  • Cut down on coronavirus update

While it is advisable to stay up-to-do with changing guidelines and norms about the coronavirus, you don’t necessarily have to go through each and every update about the pandemic. It should be noted that a lot of unnecessary and false updates keep doing rounds about COVID-19, which will only add to your worries and anxiety levels.

  • Attend an antenatal online class

Don’t let the social distancing measures stop you from learning more about your journey to motherhood and giving birth to your little one. Joining online antenatal classes will help you know more about caring for your baby and your own body during pregnancy.

  • Maintain a routine

Even as we are forced to stay indoors during the pandemic, make sure to include yoga, meditation and light exercise as a part of your daily routine. You can also listen to informative podcasts about pregnancy, read books on motherhood and practise mindfulness throughout the day.

  • Connect with psychologist

If you are not able to put a pause on disturbing thoughts on your own, it is best to seek professional help. In addition to regular consultation with your gynaecologist for antenatal check-ups, consider taking an online session with a psychologist if you continue feeling depressed and anxious.

Over to you

Pregnancy is a crucial stage and especially in the times of pandemic. It is essential to take necessary precautions and stay positive while following the guidelines.
