Weight Changes In PCOS

You will be surprised to know that most women tend to gain weight at some point with the medical condition PCOS. And for those women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) gets difficult to lose weight which becomes a constant struggle. Women with PCOS have increased levels of male hormones and are less sensitive to insulin. So, let’s see what the reason is behind putting on those extra kilos.

Why does polycystic ovary syndrome cause weight gain?

Insulin is an essential hormone responsible for dealing with sugar content in your blood streams. It transports sugar to your muscles and if your body already has more glucose than it is needed, the body starts storing it in the form of fat. Studies unfold the fact women with PCOS have some dysfunction in their cells (Beta cells) which are responsible for the secretion of insulin. These cells are seemed to be responsible for detecting sugar in the bloodstream that may overreact by producing extra insulin than it’s needed. Making more glucose to be stored in your body as fat.

Furthermore, many of the women with PCOS have “insulin resistance.” That means, their body requires more insulin than the normal insulin to deal with or metabolize sugar in the bloodstream. Hence, those high levels of insulin in the body cause it to store more fat and causes ovaries to produce more testosterone, leading the symptoms of PCOS to worse. Insulin resistance is the only suspect due to which, women with PCOS are likely to gain weight and finds harder to lose at times.
