Raising Awareness for Epilepsy Nutrition

Today, around 50 million people worldwide are affected by epilepsy. Epilepsy is a disorder in which a person has unprompted, recurring seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

Epilepsy awareness day is an international grassroots effort to promote awareness for epilepsy, also known as Purple Day. People all over the countries are invited to wear purple in order to support awareness for epilepsy.

Knowing and recognizing triggers associated with epilepsy is the first step to prevent epilepsy. The most common cause of epilepsy is the defect in the structure of the brain, stroke, head injury or tumor. Sadly in 50% of the cases, the cause is still unknown.

Symptoms of epilepsy

  •  Change in sleep schedule, significant sleep deprivation, and feeling of extreme tiredness.
  • Something that over stimulates the senses, such as lights with a bright flash, television, or working on the computer.
  •  Stress, anxiety, panics or other emotional issues.

Nutrients to prevent epilepsy

  • Healthy fats: Healthy fat is the polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats. These fats are beneficial to be added to the diet in order to prevent epilepsy and also during the treatment. Healthy fats provide energy and water-soluble vitamins.

Sources of healthy fats: Extra virgin oil, avocados, coconut oil, and avocado oil.

  • Low- carb vegetables: It is beneficial to have low carb food. The food with lower carbs has more complex carbs than the simple carb. It prevents and improves epilepsy and various serious health conditions.

Sources of low carb vegetables: Kale, spinach, broccoli, and asparagus.

  • Omega 3 fatty acid: Omega 3 helps in fighting depression and anxiety. It is curtailing for brain growth and development in infants. It decreases the frequency of mood swings prevents the risk of disorders such as epilepsy.

Sources of omega 3: Salmon, eggs, trout, and walnuts

  • Protein: protein is essential to repair body tissues. It is an important component of every cell of the body. Protein is a major element which is to be added in the diets of people to prevent epilepsy. It is a micronutrient and is required by the body in large amount.

Sources of protein: Milk, cheese and yogurt

The research is still going on associated cause with epilepsy but the best that can be done right now is to adopt a diet and a lifestyle which prevents the triggers of seizures. Along with that, there is a need to recognize this disorder like any other problem and help in all possible way to prevent it.

Thyme is a Mediterranean herb and has been traditionally used to cure diarrhoea, stomach ache and sore throat.


2 small beets

Few sprigs of thyme

1 teaspoon olive oil

1 teaspoon lemon zest

Salt- as per taste

Calorie = 112 kcal
Protein = 2.8 grams
Carbohydrates = 14.8 grams
Fat = 4.7 grams

Cut beets into thin slices

Put them in a saucepan, with some water. Boil until tender

Next, light your charcoal or barbecue fire

Take a large piece of foil and lay the beets in them. Brush a little olive oil and top with thyme and lemon zest.

Fold the foil and twist the ends together. Punch small holes in the foil with the help of a knife or fork.

Leave it to cook for 15-20 minutes.

Once cooked, allow it to cool and then discard the charred skin.

Toss with salt and pepper, and serve.
