Mizo Dal

The cuisine of Mizoram also known as Mizo has similar characteristics to other regions of Northeast India and North India. Mizo dal is a mixture of three lentils and is prepared using mustard oil.

Nutritional Benefits

Lentils are a highly nutritious food since they are rich in minerals, protein, and fiber. They also contain appreciable amounts of folate and manganese. Lentils contain appreciable amounts of riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium which are beneficial for overall health. Evidence from many studies has suggested that increasing consumption of plant foods like lentils decreases the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and overall mortality.

Ingredients

  • 10 grams moong dal
  • 10 grams toor dal
  • 10 grams masoor dal
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 10 grams onion
  • 10 grams tomato
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1green chili (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard oil
  • Salt to taste

Method

  • Pressure cook the three dals for 3 whistles and add turmeric while cooking.
  • Finely chop onions, tomatoes and green chili.
  • Heat oil in a pan; add the onion and green chilies and sauté them until they are translucent.
  • Add tomatoes and sauté them till they are completely mushy.
  • Now, add the cooked dal and water to the pan and adjust the consistency as needed.
  • Serve hot.
