Healthy Swaps for Navratri

Fasting need not necessarily be boring anymore! The biggest and most popular 9 days of Hindu’s festival, Navratri is one of the most celebrated occasions to cleans and energise your body. The bright and most auspicious festival is also the perfect time to give your body a break from junk. The most commonly eaten food during navratri are falahaar (fruits), aloosabzi and kuttupooris. While most of the foods consumed are loaded with oil, ghee or sugar and hence, carry heavy calories! Here are some healthy swaps for Navaratri that makes your festival happy and healthy.

✔ Singhare atta dosa: In a bowl, mash arbi and mix it with flour and salt. Add cumin seeds, ginger, green chillies and water. Add water and make it into batter of smooth flowing consistency. Heat a flat pan, dab a bit of ghee and spread the batter. Cook for few minutes and spread ghee around edges. Flip the dosa and let it cook until golden brown.

✔ Baked sabudana tikkis: Preheat the oven at 200 degree Celsius. Add kuttu flour, sesame seeds, soaked sabudana and boiled potatoes in a bowl and mix well. Make round tikkis out of it. Bake them at 140 degree Celsius. Relish this healthful swap during navratri!

✔ Low-fat samak chawal kheer: Boil and cook the samak rice just as you cook regular rice. In a vessel, pour milk, let it simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours without covering, till the milk boils down. Add samak rice, sugar and stir for a few minutes. Add nuts like almonds and cardamom powder and saffron. Stir well again and serve hot or cold, as you like.

✔ Baked aloo kebab: To the boiled mashed potatoes, add ginger and cardamom. Add spices and mix well. Form dough like consistency. Shape into small circular rods and roll it in kuttukaatta. Heat a thin layer of ghee and fry the kebabs over medium flame until brown on both the sides. Keep rolling the rods until they turn brown from all the sides.

✔ Banana almond lassi: Blend yogurt, sesame seeds, almonds, honey and banana together. Blend well until smooth and creamy. Transfer into a glass and garnish it with nuts like almonds and walnuts. Serve chilled!
