Battling with Lupus, Selena Gomez Faces Criticism on her Weight Gain

Singer Selena Gomez recently opened up about her battle with body shaming and suffering from life-threatening health issues. Struggling with lupus and due to side effects of heavy medication dosage, she has put on weight. According to the National Health Society (NHS), lupus is a long-term autoimmune condition causing inflammation to the joints, skin and other organs.

While there is currently no cure for this disease, symptoms can improve if treatment starts early. She ultimately had to undergo kidney transplant surgery after suffering from a series of health complications from her condition, including kidney failure. She was vocal about how it really messed her up. The singer has since made a comeback and has been traveling the country doing interviews to promote her new music and upcoming album.

The 25-year-old, who has already been dealing with mental and physical health issues and she revealed that she has experienced body shaming due to weight fluctuation for the first time.

Selena Gomez has been through some challenging times over the past few years. Moreover, she has been in news for high profile break-ups with on-again, off-again boyfriend Justin Bieber, the 27-year- old has also struggled with mental health, taking frequent breaks from the spotlight and social media.

In latest interview with Raquelle Stevens for an episode of Giving Back Generation, the pop singer agreed how the criticism for gaining weight “messed her”up. She has lupus and deals with kidney issues and high blood pressure, and other health issues, and for that’s when she really started noticing more about body image.

However, she admitted that this criticism and body shaming is probably the reason why the pop singer took a hiatus from social media in 2018. Now that she is back on social media, she does not feel the urge to post much on the social media platform and the comments don’t bother her as much. Talking about the same, she said she is happy with living her life and being present. Similar to posting a photo and walking away; for her that’s it. I will do a red carpet, I will do whatever; I don’t need to see it; I participated; I felt wonderful and that’s where the extent of it is. I don’t care to expose myself to everyone and hear what they have to say.

She looks forward to spread her message to all the beautiful girls who keep demolishing by an image they’re trying to chase.

She mentioned that they want to be a completely different person, but that’s not what’s inside of them. Gomez later also added that earlier, she also used to look at people’s pages and thought of fixing herself to be like them and deep inside, we know we cannot be like them because we are no them and everyone else is unique in their own way.

She stated that these days she leans on her faith and her friends, saying, “I don’t believe that I could do this life alone.”

However, despite the body-shaming on weight gain and the pain, Gomez acknowledged that she still strives to live her life by the golden rule- “treat other people the way you wish you were treated.”

The singer-actress said that the biggest lesson she’s had to teach herself and learn is how to learn to deal with the people that have hurt her the most, to continue to understand and to forgive them and have compassion for people.
