Mouth ulcers may look tiny but the stinging pain and discomfort they cause can drive anyone over the edge. No doubt that it makes eating, drinking and sometimes even talking difficult. Discomforting as they are, mouth ulcers can be caused due to genes, stress, certain chronic medical conditions, medicines, hot food, hormonal imbalance, ill-fitting denture problems, or biting the inside of the cheek while chewing food. In certain cases, it can also be caused during pregnancy or due to indigestion.

Honey: It has antibacterial and wound healing properties. Honey will not only help ease pain but will also reduce the size of ulcers. Honey also retains moisture and prevents your mouth from dryness. Apply it in every few hours for relief. It will quicken the natural healing process of the mouth ulcer and keep it infection-free.

Triphala: Triphala heals most of the stomach related issues. This powerful Ayurvedic herbal powder which has healing properties is a combination of three Indian fruits- Amalaki, Haritaki and Bibhitaki. In a cup of water, mix ½ teaspoon of triphala to make a decoction. Gargle with it once a day and hold it in your mouth for 1 to 2 minutes and then spit it out.

Turmeric: This is the most famous kitchen ingredient for healing wounds. A potent antioxidant compound called curcumin present in turmeric have anti-inflammatory properties. You can apply thick paste of turmeric powder and water with cotton swab and wash it after 15-20 minutes.

Aloe vera juice: This simple home remedy is the easiest way to get relief from mouth ulcers. It even cures stomach ulcers and offers relief by healing the stomach lining and reducing acidic secretions. Also, aloe vera is effective against ulcers because it gives a cooling and soothing effect. Make sure you extract fresh aloe vera from the aloe vera plant. Simply, rub it twice to thrice in a day.

Ghee or coconut oil: This age old remedy for mouth ulcers your grandmother may have often told you about has natural inflammatory properties. Apply desi ghee on the ulcer and let it stay for few minutes and then spit it out. Swish some coconut oil in your mouth and then spit it out. Rinse your mouth properly in order to avoid any residue left in the mouth.

Tulsi: It is therapeutic and has medicinal properties which work quick on mouth ulcers. Chew some fresh leaves, put it in water or buttermilk and drink twice a day or boil with fenugreek leaves and gargle with it two-three times a day. Make sure you regularly use it for a week to reap maximum benefits.
