Is Milk Consumption Harmful to Health?

Milk is considered the perfect food, especially in the initial growth phase of children. Containing proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins, it forms a substantial part and parcel of diet for people of all age groups.

Milk contains calcium which is the pivotal mineral around which the health of our bones revolves. The sodium in milk plays a role in stimulating the adrenal glands, which aids in the prevention of sunstroke. Milk, for human consumption, is mostly taken from cow or buffalo. There is also a slew of dairy products which find their roots to milk viz. Cheese, butter, curd etc. It has many vital nutrients including calcium, protein, vitamin D and B12 and minerals like potassium, phosphorous and selenium.

Misperceptions about Milk

The common judgment that milk is healthy has now grown little doubtful because the money making hands that entered the dairy businesses have eroded milk’s nutritional value. To get the sale on a higher notch the cow’s and buffaloes are now injected with drugs to produce more milk casting a deteriorative effect on the animal and passing the drug to human’s food chain. Besides they are also injected with antibiotics which are simply passed to humans after the consumption of their milk causing a serious problem of antibiotic resistance, which is a great obstacle for kids to have a healthy and disease-free life.

Alternatives to Milk:

Milk taken from cows and buffaloes who graze on grass are most beneficial, and this fact has been supported by some sturdy researches across the world. This milk is called organic milk or free-range milk and have more fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients than non-organic milk.

The pasteurized milk that we get in the shops next to our doors, is the processed form of milk. Actually, pasteurization was invented to kill the unwanted germs and bacteria and increase the shelf life of milk. But this process also dismantles its nutritional makeup by destroying vitamin C and making it easy in digestion, leaving the child hungry soon after its consumption. But still, it’s highly recommended as it deletes the chances of bacterial infections which is of most importance.

Adulteration- The new normal

Adulteration is the new common in the food industry, which is intentional debasing the natural composition of food. Usually, adulteration is done in the inferior quality of food and milk is no exception. A series of adulterants are used to sharpen its dress up in the form of looks and density, to name a few are water, starch, detergent, and urea. To stay away from such a product, we must make sure that the source of the milk is a credible person/company.

The growing kid’s needs:

In order to have all the required nutrients, children in the growing years should consume full cream milk and not the skimmed ones. And if the kid is lactose intolerant then soy milk is a good substitute which is the plant-based milk obtained by grinding soaked soya beans with water which have the same amount of protein as cow’s milk.

Make sure that the vivacious childhood of your kid is protected from the harmful effects of unhealthy milk and this can be done by keeping a tight vigil on the quality of milk and its source.  The dietary goal of your kid should be to achieve health.

2 small beets

Few sprigs of thyme

1 teaspoon olive oil

1 teaspoon lemon zest

Salt- as per taste

Calorie = 112 kcal
Protein = 2.8 grams
Carbohydrates = 14.8 grams
Fat = 4.7 grams

Cut beets into thin slices

Put them in a saucepan, with some water. Boil until tender

Next, light your charcoal or barbecue fire

Take a large piece of foil and lay the beets in them. Brush a little olive oil and top with thyme and lemon zest.

Fold the foil and twist the ends together. Punch small holes in the foil with the help of a knife or fork.

Leave it to cook for 15-20 minutes.

Once cooked, allow it to cool and then discard the charred skin.

Toss with salt and pepper, and serve.
