- Caffeine: Newborn babies cannot excrete caffeine as efficiently an adult can and the accumulated caffeine passed in their bodies while breastfeeding can causes irritation, crankiness and sleeplessness. Moreover, a high ratio of caffeine in mothers can also lower the iron levels in breast milk and decrease haemoglobin levels in the baby.
- Alcohol: Keep in mind that the consumption of alcohol can pass through your breast milk into the baby’s system and have adverse effects on baby’s neurological development. Having a glass of beer or wine once a week is fine but the higher consumption can inhibit the mother’s reflex. And if you decide to consume more than one drink at the same time then wait at least for two to three hours to breastfeed your baby.
- High Mercury Fish: If you eat high-mercury fish and other seafood which are high in mercury, it can come out in your blood affecting your baby’s neurological development and can also harm the further development of baby by getting transmitted into the breast milk and then into the baby. Rather, consume fish like salmon which is high in omega-3 fatty acids, beneficial both you and your baby.
- Spicy Foods: Including spicy foods in your diet while lactation can cause irritation in babies. If you are extremely fan of spicy food than a dash of pepper will be fine to have in the beginning phase. Lessening spices in your food is recommended if your baby is comfortable with it. Cut back on the heat of spices from your food for few weeks to avoid bloating and other related issues in your baby.
- Peppermint, Parsley and Sage: These three herbs are anti-galactagogues items which mean that they been known to decrease breast milk production. It’s best to avoid these three herbs while breastfeeding. Whenever you take any of these three herbs, examine your milk supply. In fact, peppermint tea is often consumed by many mothers to stop the milk production after weaning.
