Diet Tips to Keep your Lungs Healthy

With the rise of pollution, smoking and harmful particles in the air, there is an increase in the number of people who are suffering from or are susceptible to asthma. It is important to stay vigilant of your surrounding and make sure you eat right tobreathe easy in this environment. External conditions might not be controllable, but your internal wellbeing is entirely up to you. So, here are some ways you can make sure your lungs stay healthy:

Keep the Doctor Away:

An apple a day really does keep the doctor away when it comes to asthma. Having at least 5 apples a week reduces the risk of developing asthma. The flavonoid, khellin, present in Apples is known to open up airways, making it easier for you to breathe.

Snack on Some Flax Seeds:

Flax seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids and Magnesium. The omega-3 fatty acids present in flax seeds are linked with providing anti-inflammatory effects that can reduce bronchial inflammation, a large symptom of asthma. Moreover, magnesium relaxes the muscles around the bronchi (airways) making breathing an easier task.

A Good Invest-mint:

Peppermint (or Peppermint Oil) contains Menthol, a known relaxant. Menthol soothes the muscles of our airways and promotes free breathing. Added to this, peppermint is also an antihistamine and this combination makes peppermint an excellent decongestant. Peppermint is also an antioxidant and helps fight harmful organisms. A nice warm cup of peppermint tea can do wonders for you!

Go for Oregano:

Even though oregano is known for containing vitamins and minerals required to support the immune system, it also acts as a histamine reducer and a decongestant. This is due to the presence of compounds like carvacrol and rosmarinic acid. These provide several benefits to our airways and nasal passages. Add a sprinkle of oregano to your food for a healthier, tastier meal.

 Garlic is Great:

Garlic too has several anti-inflammatory properties as well as a high level of allicin. This compound helps fight infections and reduces inflammation. Garlic also plays a hand in improving asthma and is known to help reduce the risk of lung cancer. Note: Don’t indulge in more than 2-3 cloves of garlic a day; overindulgence can lead to problems like vomiting and diarrhea.

Turn Towards Turmeric:

Turmeric (haldi) has anti-inflammatory properties that not only help keep your lungs strong and healthy, but also reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer and even Alzheimer’s. Turmeric is also full of antioxidants and helps in alleviating depression.Note:Do not consume more than ½-1 teaspoon of turmeric a day in the summer season as it increases the temperature of your body.

A Pinch of Cinnamon:

Cinnamon is known to fight bacterial, fungal and viral components. This property helps cinnamon fight ailments ranging from lung problems to the common cold. Cinnamon is also regarded as a good solution for chest congestion issues; it encourages circulation and helps clear up mucus. Note:Make sure to limit daily cinnamon consumption to ½ a teaspoon as an excess of cinnamon can hamper the cooling effects of anything else you may consume.

Thyme is a Mediterranean herb and has been traditionally used to cure diarrhoea, stomach ache and sore throat.


2 small beets

Few sprigs of thyme

1 teaspoon olive oil

1 teaspoon lemon zest

Salt- as per taste

Calorie = 112 kcal
Protein = 2.8 grams
Carbohydrates = 14.8 grams
Fat = 4.7 grams

Course- Evening Snack


Cut beets into thin slices

Put them in a saucepan, with some water. Boil until tender

Next, light your charcoal or barbecue fire

Take a large piece of foil and lay the beets in them. Brush a little olive oil and top with thyme and lemon zest.

Fold the foil and twist the ends together. Punch small holes in the foil with the help of a knife or fork.

Leave it to cook for 15-20 minutes.

Once cooked, allow it to cool and then discard the charred skin.

Toss with salt and pepper, and serve.
