Is Low Carb Diets for Acid Reflux?
Frequent acid reflux also called gastro-oesophagal (GERD), reflux diseases result of stored acid in your stomach in the oesophagus. In addition, to this discomfort and burning sensation, acid reflux can eventually direct some serious health problems like a structural change of your oesophagus or even cancer. To this, eating small, frequent meals, maintaining a healthy weight, not lying down after meals and restricting refined carb intake can help prevent and reduce acid reflux.
It may sound counter-intuitive but a low-carb diet could be beneficial to reduce or prevent acid reflux. Since conventional medical advice advocates avoiding high-fat diet, it could be confusing for people with acid reflux issue. Also, few foods people often enjoy on a low-carb diet are cautioned too against in traditional advice for acid reflux, such as dark chocolate, aforementioned coffee, garlic, tomato sauces and onions. Additionally, according to this traditional advice, putting butter or coconut oil in coffee or tea could be the worst thing for
people with reflux!
In multiple surveys, people reported complete resolution of acid reflux after ditching carbs. Fortunately for skeptics, some scientific researchers are corroborating these experiments. However, low-carb diet has been proven effective for relieving from acid reflux issue. Moreover, one study reported that five patients, self-initiated to follow a low-carb diet and come up with a complete resolution from acid reflux. Three of them cut down on coffee, and all of them eliminated acidic foods. They come across with a fact that, “carb may be a precipitating factor for acid reflux symptoms and that other classic exacerbating foods such as coffee and fat may be less relatable when a low-carb diet is followed.” So the observation says, coffee and an omelette could be fine for people with acid reflux but that same coffee and a donut or muffins could spell disaster to esophageal causing acid reflux.
The mechanism for the effectiveness of low-carb diet in the reduction and prevention of acid reflux has yet to be resolute. The positive results found in the UNC study with a very low-carb diet appeared within less than a week indicates that a carb-restricted diet may help reduce acid reflux in more than one way. But for accurate results, more studies are still needed to replicate these findings and better understand the mechanism.
