Breast Milk vs Formula Milk

Breast milk and formula milk, both are fed to infants as per the preference of mothers. But the confusion of choosing between breast milk and formula milk continues among new mothers. Today, we are here to give a clear justification for what could be the best for mothers and their babies. Breast milk is suggested as the best nutritional choice for infants and even recommended by doctors. But for all mothers, breastfeeding may not possible and may opt for formula feed due to their some medical condition. In situations like this formula milk may be the next another healthy alternative for moms to feed their baby as formula provides the nutrients they need to grow and thrive. Whereas, breast milk still prevail in the battle with some amazing healthful benefits and dietary essentials serving to both, baby and mother.

Babies should be breastfed completely for the initial first six months. Beyond that, breastfeeding is encouraged till six more months and also longer if both, mother and baby are willing.

Benefits of Breast Milk

  • Breast milk has antibiotics which prevent an infant from getting ill so frequently.
  • Breast milk also prevents an infant from ear infections, eczema, and stomach issues.
  • Breastfed infants are less likely to be hospitalized due to initial year health complications.
  • Breast milk possibly lowers the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.
  • Breastfed infants in later years are less likely to become obese, develop asthma, type-1 and type-2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

  • Breastfeeding may also help lower the risk of certain diseases in mothers like diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, breast and ovarian cancers.

The comparison

Talking of fat– Breast milk is rich in brain-developing and building omega 3s called DHA and AA, rich in healthy cholesterol, almost completely absorbed, contains fat-digesting enzyme and lipase (perform essential roles in digestion, transport, and processing of dietary lipids.) On the other hand formula, milk has no DHA, cholesterol, lipase and doesn’t get completely absorbed.

Protein: Protein found in breast milk is soft, easily-digestible, gets completely absorbed, high in lactoferrin for intestinal health, lysozyme, an antimicrobial, loaded with brain and bodybuilding protein and also, contains sleep-inducing proteins. Whereas, formula milk is harder to get digested, not completely absorbed, harder on kidneys, no trace of lactoferrin and lysozyme, deficient in few brain and body building proteins, growth factors and sleep-inducing proteins.

Carbohydrate: Breast milk is enriched with lactose and oligosaccharides that promote intestinal health. Formula milk on contrary has no lactose in some formulas and found deficient in oligosaccharides.

Vitamins and Minerals: Vitamins are mineral in breast milk is better absorbed, especially calcium, iron, and zinc. Iron gets absorbed by fifty to seventy-five percent and also, contains more of selenium (an antioxidant.) In formula milk vitamins and minerals are not absorbed that well even iron gets absorbed by five to ten percent and contains less selenium.

Immune Boosters: Last but not the least breast milk is rich in live white blood cells and immune globulins (prevent or treat diseases that occur when the body has a weak immunity). Whereas, in formula milk, there’s no live white blood cells or any other cells. Dead food like formula milk has less immune benefit with immune globulins.

Nutritional Benefits

Beetroot provides you with fibre, iron, potassium, folate and Vitamin C which is good for skin and further act as an antioxidant. It can improve exercise performance, lower blood pressure and serve as a low calorie food. It can also improve digestion and help in weight management. Thyme is a Mediterranean herb and has been traditionally used to cure diarrhoea, stomach ache and sore throat.

Ingredients

2 small beets

Few sprigs of thyme

1 teaspoon olive oil

1 teaspoon lemon zest

Salt- as per taste

Calorie = 112 kcal
Protein = 2.8 grams
Carbohydrates = 14.8 grams
Fat = 4.7 grams
Recommended for- High Blood Pressure and Digestion
Course- Evening Snack

Method

Cut beets into thin slices

Put them in a saucepan, with some water. Boil until tender

Next, light your charcoal or barbecue fire

Take a large piece of foil and lay the beets in them. Brush a little olive oil and top with thyme and lemon zest.

Fold the foil and twist the ends together. Punch small holes in the foil with the help of a knife or fork.

Leave it to cook for 15-20 minutes.

Once cooked, allow it to cool and then discard the charred skin.

Toss with salt and pepper, and serve.
